ULTIMATE STRICTLY Advent Calendar 2018
Sunday 2nd December 2018
The salsa was introduced to Strictly in the fourth series, and we’ve seen a huge variety of dances over the years, but too often it’s used with a theme week, or ends up with more of a cha cha or disco feel, so looking back over my favourites, this one rose towards the top of the pile.
Matt di Angelo took part in the series five dancing with Flavia Cacace, and had a roller coaster of a ride, starting with a nervous but promising cha cha in the first week, to an impressive American Smooth in the third week which scored 36 points, and the first outing of this salsa in week 8 saw him earn his first 10s of the series with a score of 38. His scores went up and down throughout the series, but nerves were always a problem and in the quarterfinal, dancing two routines each week by then, Matt struggled with the foxtrot and then forgot the choreography of the samba for their second dance, but was saved by the public vote. Bouncing back the next week, he scored a perfect 40 for his waltz which saw him earn his place in the final, where he danced the salsa again, and increased his score to 39, but ended the series as runner up.
The salsa, danced to Vehicle, was rhythmic, smooth and fluid, and is definitely one of my favourite salsa routines of them all. I can’t deny it, Flavia has been one of my favourite professional dancers in the whole of Strictly, and when I picking my favourite dances from the past, I knew I’d be including some of Flavia’s routines. In interviews, she’s said that she dances for herself and her partner, and I think that shines though this performance.
So sit back and enjoy this fantastic dance from our series five finalists.
