ANDREW CASTLE

Sportsman and Presenter

Former professional tennis player, Andrew started playing tennis at the age of nine, and as a junior, won the UK Under-12 National Tennis Championship, after which he obtained a full scholarship to attend the well known sport specialist school, Millfield School. He turned professional in 1986 and ranked as number one in Great Britain, and during his career won three tour doubles titles and was a mixed doubles finalist in the Australian Open. He was also a member of the British Davis Cup team and European Cup team, and represented Great Britain at two Olympic Games in Seoul, 1988 and Barcelona, 1992.

Since retiring from tennis, Andrew has moved into television, starting as a sports commentator for Sky, before joining GMTV in 2000 as well as being a part of the BBC Tennis commentary team covering Wimbledon and all other televised tennis competitions.

Andrew was the third GMTV presenter to take part in Strictly Come Dancing, and danced in the sixth series of the show with professional dancer Ola Jordan. Andrew & Ola had a promising start to the competition, with a Cha Cha Cha which scored 23 points, although the routine is probably more memorable for Ola's skin tight catsuit, but put them third on the judges leaderboard and safe for the next round. Unfortunately, it was not to continue, with their next dance a Tango including an odd head banging move, and followed by an American Smooth where Andrew came close to dropping Ola in one of the lifts. Public voting kept them in the competition, and the next week Andrew showed definite improvement in posture and hold in his third ballroom dance in a row, the Viennese Waltz, and scored his best mark of 24 points, but left them in a dangerous mid-low position on the leaderboard, and saw them in the bottom two dance-off. A reprieve from the judges, and Andrew returned the following week with his second latin routine, the Samba, but after sustaining a knee injury in training, Ola had to change the opening to the dance and put in a paso influenced section, but the judges weren't impressed and left Andrew second to last on the leader board. The public vote left them in the bottom two, and the judges decided not to save them again, finishing the competition in tenth place out of sixteen couples.
