Bill's career as a journalist since starting with Radio Clyde in 1978, and joined the BBC in 1986. He has been regularly reporting and presenting on the BBC Breakfast show since 2001, and has covered some of the major news stories of the last few years including travelling to New Orleans to cover the events following Hurricane Katrina and the July the 7th London bombings, when he anchored the programme live from Kings Cross.
Bill competed in series three of Strictly Come Dancing, and was partnered with Karen Hardy. Bill's first dance was the Cha Cha Cha, and thanks to some fantastic choreography from Karen, they scored 29 points from the judges and ended third on the leaderboard. During training for their second week dance, the Quickstep, Bill sustained an ankle injury, and it went downhill from there, and although the public kept them in the competition until week seven, they never got back up to the level they achieved in the first week, and finished the competition 6th out of ten couples.
