Carol was accepted at Cambridge University where she read Engineering. At the age of 21, she appeared in "Countdown", the first programme ever to be shown on Channel 4 in 1982, and has continued in that role ever since. She has also presented and produced other television programmes, many specialist science and educational shows, as well as writing books on the popular puzzle Sudoku. Carol was awarded the MBE in 2000 for services to broadcasting.
Carol's professional dance partner in Strictly Come Dancing was Paul Killick, and they competed in the second series of the show. Their waltz showed promise in the first show, but Carol seemed like she was trying to hard in the rumba, and the public voted them out in the second week, finishing 9th out of ten couples.
