There was a big change in format for the Christmas Special at the end of series eight. Instead of giving some of the series dancers a chance to let down their hair and have a Strictly Christmas party, it was decided to bring in five brand new celebrities and give them a few weeks training and give them one shot at dancing on Strictly. As usual, the judges were feeling remarkably generous awarding some 10s to some of the celebrities, but the exuberance of actor John Barrowman (and I suspect the pleasure at seeing Kristina dancing with a celebrity who could actually dance) saw him win on the night.

Fern worked as a television presenter since 1979, working on a variety of regional and national programmes as a news reader and continuity announcer, before coming to prominence when she hosted the hit daytime cookery show, Ready, Steady, Cook, before going on to host This Morning with Phillip Schofield, where the pair were hugely popular and became renowned for getting the giggles during the live broadcast. She has a career as a novelist, the author of a selection of bestselling books. Fern was partnered with Matt Cutler.

Scottish born John Barrowman, emigrated to the United States as a child, but returned to the UK as a presenter and actor, becoming famous in Saturday morning show Live and Kicking, and has starred in many West End musicals and is probably best known to TV viewers as the dashing Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and its spin-off series Torchwood.  John was partnered with Kristina Rihanoff.

June had a wide and varied acting career, but is most notable for playing the role of Dot Cotton in the BBC One soap, EastEnders, and is one of the few remaining original cast members from when the series started in 1985.  June was partnered with Vincent Simone for the 2010 Christmas Special.

Ronni first came to fame starring alongside Alistair McGowan in The Big Impression, performing a host of celebrity impressions, the pair became notable for their take on David and Victoria Beckham.  Ronni has since gone on to perform a variety of serious and comedic roles on stage as well as television. Ronni was partnered with Anton Du Beke.

Vince Cable graduated from Cambridge University with a PhD in Economics and worked in that field until being elected as a Member of Parliament in 1997 and under the Conservative/Liberal Democrats coalition government that came to power in 2010, became the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills.  Vince was partnered with Erin Boag.
