COLIN JACKSON

Sportsman

World, Commonwealth and European champion hurdler, Colin Jackson competed at the highest level of athletics from 1986 to 2002 and held the 110m Hurdles World Record for 11 years. Only the Olympic title eluded him, with his best performance coming in 1988 when he won the silver medal. Colin was awarded the MBE in 1988 followed by the CBE in 1992 for services to athletics.

Colin competed in the third series of Strictly Come Dancing with professional dancer Erin Boag. As an olympic athlete, Colin brought his competitive nature to Strictly, and with "Miss Whiplash" teaching him to dance, the pair had the drive and the determination to aim for gold. A good Cha Cha Cha in week one led into a fantastic quickstep in week two, but two weeks of jury service for Colin meant a lack of available training hours for the next few dances, including their lowest score of the competition in week three with their Tango, and it wasn't until week eight that they really got back into their stride, with the best male celebrity Rumba we'd seen in Strictly and scoring 36 points. The very next week, Colin was the first male celebrity to receive a 10, when Arlene decided to give him the top mark for the newly introduced American Smooth.

Colin and Erin made it through to the series final along with Zoe & Ian and Darren & Lilia, and after Zoe & Ian were announced as placed third, Colin & Erin were the first to perform their show dance, later to become known as "Muppetgate". Trying to show Colin's technical ability, Erin decided to use dummies which were attached at the wrist and ankle to each dancer to show her and Colin dancing separately. The judges slated it, comparing it to an "end of pier" show and criticising Erin, and although Colin defended Erin's decision, it was probably to lose them the competition, and they ended the series runners-up.

In the 2006 Christmas Special, Colin and Erin were to taste victory, with an amazing Quickstep which they danced to "I Get A Kick Out Of You", scoring a perfect 40 from the judges, and the audience voted them to Christmas Champions.
