Gethin is well known as the action man of Blue Peter, with no challenge too tough for him to attempt, he attempted activities such as flying with the Red Arrows, completing submarine escape training with the Royal Navy and fighting as a samuari warrior Japan, but his biggest accomplishment was arguably when he became the first civilian to complete the Royal Marine Commando 30-mile yomp, finishing in a time of 8 hours and 20 minutes.

In addition to his work on Blue Peter, Gethin presents an entertainment programme called "E24" on the BBC News24 channel, and has also completed two guest appearances on "Doctor Who", playing a Cyberman in 2006 and a Dalek in the 2008 series finale.

Gethin was paired with Camilla Dallerup for the fifth series of Strictly Come Dancing. Starting with an underwhelming Cha Cha Cha, Gethin received mixed reviews from the judges, but showed gradual improvement through the weeks, until week six, when Camilla choreographed a beautiful Viennese Waltz and they received four 9's for their routine. Taking her inspiration from Lilia in series four, Camilla brought in a drama teacher to help Gethin with the performance aspect of the dance, and it paid dividends when in week nine, they received three 10's and a total of 39 points for their stunning, romantic Waltz. It was the semi-final when Gethin ended in the bottom two for the dance-off, and the judges voted to save Matt & Flavia, leaving Gethin & Camilla to finish the series in third place. The pair were invited back to take part in the 2007 Christmas Special, where with another gorgeous Waltz, they scored a perfect 40, and were joint top of the leaderboard with Darren & Lilia from series three, but were just pipped to the post by the audience voting to crown Darren & Lilia winners on the night.
