Heather grew up in West London, and while she was a teenager, joined her first band called "Hot House", but after meeting Mike Pickering, she became a member of the group "M People". With Heather's distinctive voice, the band achieved worldwide fame and sold over 10 million albums, with hit songs including "Moving On Up" and "Search for the Hero" which have become popular anthems of the 1990's. She has also had considerable solo success, with highlights including the song "Proud" which has become Heather's signature track, and has been used widely in connection with sporting events, such as the British Olympics team in 2000 and the World Cup winning English Rugby team in 2003, as well as the theme tune for "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and used on the Channel 4 drama series, "Queer As Folk". M People have recently reformed to play several concerts and festivals in 2007 and 2008, and Heather performed at the Olympic handover concert in London, and "Proud" will again be the official anthem of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Heather danced with Brian Fortuna in the sixth series of Strictly Come Dancing. Heather & Brian started the series with a Salsa, with Len dubbing Heather "Queen of the Salsa", but suffering with crippling nerves, Heather's next dance, the Quickstep, left her in the bottom two for the first time. The judges saved her to dance again the next week, where she danced a Samba, but with expectations high after a good Salsa, Heather's nerves got the better of her again and with a low position on the leader board, she and Brian had to dance in their second dance-off. Another vote of confidence from the judges, and Heather & Brian returned the next week with a Viennese Waltz, which was a much better dance and earned them a reprieve from the dreaded bottom two. It was back to latin the following week, with a Cha Cha Cha to an appropriate choice of song, "American Boy", but yet again, a lack of public support put them in the bottom two and another dance-off. Another break from the judges saw Heather dance again the next week, performing a Tango with her best performance so far, but with most of the other couples improving at a faster pace, and some controversial voting from the public, Heather & Brian were to compete in their fourth dance-off. The judges decided not to save them again, and they finished the competition on a high with their best dance, but placed ninth out of fourteen couples.
