John started his football career at the age of 17 when he was signed to Watford, making his debut as a substitute in 1981, and was given his first England cap less than two years later. In 1987 he moved to Liverpool where he stayed for 10 years, made 407 appearances and scored 108 goals, before moving onto Newcaste United and Charlton Athletic. John will always be remembered for his rap in the England World Cup theme song, "World In Motion" by New Order. Since retiring from playing, John is now in demand as a football match analyst, and is also an ambassador for the Save The Children charity.
John was invited to take part in the fifth series of Strictly Come Dancing, and was partnered with Nicole Cutler. It was fairly obvious from the start of the competition that John had natural rhythm, and their Cha Cha Cha in week one got great feedback from the judges, a total score of 26 points and put them top of the leaderboard. John's progress halted after the high of the first week, with a Jive that didn't suit him as his next dance in week three, followed by two ballroom dances, which were made difficult by John's poor posture. The Salsa was next in week six, and John was back at the top. Len thought it was so good he awarded John the first 10 of the series. The next week brought John another ballroom dance, and he was back towards the bottom of the leaderboard. In week eight, a return to latin, with a Samba, but it was bottom of the leaderboard again, in the bottom two with the public vote added in, and after the dance-off, the judges decided it was time for John to leave the competition, finishing seventh out of fourteen couples.
