Television Presenter & Genius

Most people of a certain age will have grown up with Johnny Ball on their television sets. Bristol born Johnny was a stalwart of children's television of 1970s and 1980s, starting on shows such as Play School and Play Away, before moving onto maths and science programmes including Think of a Number, Think Again and The Great Egg Race. He has continued to promote maths and science giving talks to schools and businesses, and has received four honorary doctorates from different universities, as well as being an Ambassador for British Engineering.

Strictly Come Dancing fans may remember seeing Johnny in the audience of the show when daughter Zoe competed in series three, her first dance, the waltz, bringing on tears of pride, and was one of the mystery guests on last years It Takes Two which Zoe now presents.

(Note: I make no secret of the fact that Johnny was one of my childhood heroes, and I'm delighted to see him competing in the competition, so watch out for favouritsm on my behalf - Claire.)

Johnny competed in the tenth series of Strictly Come Dancing and was partnered with Aliona Vilani, however, Aliona suffered a fractured ankle in training prior to the first show, so Johnny danced with new professional Iveta Lukosiute, a Lithuanian dancer, from the US version of So You Think You Can Dance. Iveta is a ballroom and latin specialist, and a World Champion Professional 10-Dance of the World Dance Council. Although being the oldest celebrity ever to compete on Strictly, and despite the disruption in the preparation for the first dances due to Aliona's injury, Johnny performed a creditable Cha cha cha in the first week, although as Craig pointed out, he couldn't stop singing along to the music, and his Waltz in week two was rather charming. But a combined score of 37 points after the first two dances left Johnny & Iveta fourth from bottom of the leaderboard, and the public vote put him in the dance-off, and the judges voted unanimously to see Johnny be the first to leave the competition finishing in 14th position.
