Kate's career began at BBC Radio Oxford, before moving into television news, where she has worked for Central News, Meridian, BBC News 24 and Sky. She joined GMTV in 2000 and has presented the travel segment, "Where On Earth?" and reported from the Cannes Film Festival and is now one of the anchors of the show. Kate was one of the panel of questioners on the National Lottery programme, "The People's Quiz" and has been a guest on shows such as "Have I Got News For You", "Never Mind The Buzzcocks" and "Loose Women".
Appearing in the fifth series of Strictly Come Dancing, Kate was partnered with professional dancer Anton Du Beke, but after suffering a serious tendon injury during the training leading up to the competition, Kate's progress was limited. As the first week of the series is just for the male celebrities, Kate was excused from the group dance that the female celebrities had to take part in, and was actually still on crutches at that point. Determined to try and perform on the second show, Kate had only three days practise, and was received praise for being brave enough to compete, but slated by the judges and received only 15 points for her Quickstep. Although she was gradually able to build up the amount of training she was able to do, Kate didn't have a natural dance ability, and was in a particularly strong group of female celebrities, so struggled to make up any ground on any of the other dancers. Her warm, funny, self-depracting personality endeared her to the public, and she was kept in the competition never making the bottom two and, therefore, the dance-off, where the judges would almost certainly have voted her off. Her last dance was to be a Paso Doble in week seven, which received a total of 21 points, but it had got to the stage of the competition when the public start to vote for the best dancer, and not the best entertainer, and Kate found herself in the Sunday dance-off. The judges unanimously voted to save the other couple, John & Nicole, and Kate finished the competition eighth out of fourteen couples.
