A student of the Sylvia Young Theatre school, Matt's career started with modelling jobs and commercials as well as television appearances in "Harbour Lights" and "I Dream". Prior to competing in Strictly, he was best known for his role as Deano Wicks in the BBC soap "EastEnders", and has subsequently taken a leading role in BBC drama series "Hustle" and a guest role in "Casualty".

Matt competed with professional dancer Flavia Cacace in the fifth series of Strictly Come Dancing. The first couple to perform on the first show, Matt was extremely nervous, and his Cha Cha Cha was a reasonable effort, earning 23 points and putting them mid-table on the leaderboard. The public vote kept them in, and their next dance was a much improved Jive which the judges praised and awarded them 30 points. Matt went from strength to strength, and in week seven, their Quickstep was a fabulous routine, which was marred slightly when Matt had a slight stumble, but a quick recovery earned them more praise from the judges. In week eight, Flavia choreographed an amazing Salsa to the song "Vehicle", which Matt nailed and earned them two 10's from Arlene and Bruno, and a total of 38 points. Week nine was the first week in which the celebrities had to learn two new dances instead of one, and nerves started to get the better of Matt, and his Tango routine suffered, but seemed to improve with the Rumba, but the effect was to mean trouble for the couple in week ten. Their first dance was the Foxtrot, which started well, but about two thirds of the way through the routine, Matt forgot his steps, and Flavia was unable to help him recover, leading him to just walk back to the steps of the stage and sit down. Len and Bruno still awarded him 8's and a 4 from Craig and a 6 from Arlene were demoralising, but everyone was hoping he'd be able to put it out of his mind and make a fresh start with the Samba. Again, it started well, but about half way through he lost the choreography again, but this time he managed to recover and make it through to the end. Bottom of the leaderboard and expecting to be voted out, the couple were astounded to hear their names called out as going through to the semi-final the next week. A spectacular comeback was required to repay the public for keeping him in the competition, and that was exactly what Matt produced with a fabulous Waltz, that was awarded the prefect score of four 10's, and saw them get through to the final. In the final, they danced against Alesha & Matthew and despite scoring 39 for their Salsa, Matt & Flavia were still two points behind on the leaderboard, and in the end they finished runners-up of the series.
