Nicholas started his career in the print media, working as a journalist for newspapers such as the Evening Standard, the Daily Telegraph and the Financial Times. Joining the BBC in the North of England in 1981, he started working in television news, moved to ITN in 1984, and since then has worked for Channel 4 and News At Ten, and then became anchor of the ITV Lunchtime News.
Competing in the fourth series of Strictly Come Dancing, Nicholas was partnered with Nicole Cutler. Their first dance was the Waltz but Craig's comment was "Why bother? and the judges scores pretty much reflected that, with two 2's and a total score of just 14 points, which put them at the bottom of the leaderboard. The public vote didn't help them either, and they were the first couple to leave the show. They finished joint thirteenth out of fourteen coupes.
