Richard is one of the most successful British jockeys ever. He rode 1699 British winners during his career, and was the Champion Jockey of GB National Hunt racing three times between 1992 and 1995. He has won the Grand National twice as well as the 1988 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Richard was awarded an MBE for services to sport in 1993, but retired in 1999 due to injury, and has since worked as a racing pundit, a sports columnist as well as taking on various fundraising adventures for charity.
Dancing with series three winning professional Lilia Kopylova, Richard competed in series seven of Strictly Come Dancing. Richard was in the second group of celebrities to compete, so his first dance on the show was a group mambo, but he stood out from the start having problems with timing and technique, and when he danced in the second week, it was a surprise that his waltz was an improvement, though still needed a lot of work. He also danced a cha cha cha this week and it was obvious that Richard was not a natural dancer, but charmed the judges with his effort and enjoyment of the dance. It was to be his last dance though, and Richard and Lilia finished joint 15th out of sixteen couples.
