Journalist and presenter

Most people will identify Esther either as the presenter of the extremely successful television programme "That's Life!" which ran for 21 years, or as the founder of the charity Childline, which is a specific helpline for children in distress or danger, available 24 hours a day, every day - the first helpline of its kind in the world - which now answers more than 1.5 million calls per year. Esther received the OBE for services to broadcasting in 1992, followed by the CBE in 2006 for services to children.

Esther danced with Anton Du Beke in series two of Strictly Come Dancing. A very promising start, as their Waltz prompted Arlene to comment that she had danced "like a true professional", but they soon fell from grace with a Rumba described as "the dance of desperation", and were finally voted out on week three, after their Tango which Craig called a technical disaster but a dramatic triumph. They finished 8th out of ten couples.
