Named after a legend of the sport and with two professional tennis players as parents, Martina was always destined to be take up the sport, and starting playing at just two years old. Just ten years later, she was the youngest player ever to win one of the Grand Slam junior titles at the French Open, retaining that title the next year and adding a Wimbledon junior title to it. When she won her first professional Grand Slam title, the Australian Open, she was just 16 years old, and it was the first of five Grand Slam wins in her career, which saw her ranked as the world number one player for over 200 weeks.

Martina danced with series five champion, Matthew Cutler, in the seventh series of the Strictly Come Dancing. They performed a Waltz and Rumba on the first week of the show, but despite good judges comments and a mid-table position on the leaderboard, found themselves in the bottom two. After the dance-off, the judges votes were split evenly, and it was head judge Len Goodman deciding to save the other couple that meant Martina was the first celebrity to leave the competition, finishing in 16th place.
